When I was growing up everyone wanted kids with “backbone,” or “character.”
We quickly learned that character isn’t developed by doing what’s easy...or from doing what we wanted to do.
The secret of building backbone is revealed in consistency of thought, word, and act...and is most often revealed by simply keeping one’s word.
Do you want to be highly regarded? Do what you say!
Do you want to be trusted? Do what you promise to do!
Do you want to be admired? Do what you commit to do!
Do you want to be respected? Do what you vow to do!
Do you want to be successful? Honor the contract!
Do you want to be honored? Keep the bargain!
Do you want to be praised? Do what you sign on to do!
Do you want to be recommended? Do what you pledge!
Do you want to be appreciated? Honor your word!
Do you want to be applauded? Don’t make excuses!
Do you want to be loved? Do what love says it will do!
Being able to count on someone’s word is character’s gold standard. If a child can keep an agreement, adults ought to be able to do so. Character Building Never Ends
Backbone sometimes demands that we do more—doing what needs to be done—even when we’ve made no promise.
Backbone is worth it’s weight in gold...and it keeps us aligned with God and His promises.
