4 Meta. The will puffed up by its conquests and dominated by ambition. It is the function of the will to rule, and when man is more ambitious than wise he often makes a spectacle of himself.
The edict to destroy the Jews, which King Ahasuerus sent forth at the instigation of Haman, represents one of those foolish and unreasoning laws that we lay down when we are influenced by sense consciousness. Queen Esther, in her relation to King Ahasuerus, represents the power of love to win the will from self. The fast held by the Jews signifies a denial of all selfishness in the expression of love. The golden scepter symbolizes wisdom.
