Metaphysical meaning of Baal-berith (mbd)
Baal-berith (A. V., Judges 9:46, "the god Berith"), ba'-al-be'-r;th (Heb.)--Baal of the covenant- lord of the covenant; guardian of the covenant; lord Berith.

a The god Berith, a deity of a form of Baal worship that was taken up by Israel after the death of Gideon (Judg. 8:33; 9:4). b El-berith in Judges 9:46.

Meta. This idol was known as the lord of the covenant, or guardian of the covenant, meaning the power that defends and guards agreements or compacts. Baal-berith symbolizes the belief that is so current in the world today--the belief that mortal man can make outer laws and enter agreements that will insure safety and protection to the people of the earth and will bring about peace at home and abroad. But mortal man has no such power. The law of God, which is the law of unselfishness and love, must be established in the minds and the hearts of mankind, to bring absolute security.
