Metaphysical meaning of graven image (mbd)
graven image (Exod. 20:4).
Meta. Graven images of God are made by mental pictures. The thought of God as a great king in a place called heaven makes just such a material image in our thought realms, and we grow to believe in and worship such an imaginary being, instead of the true God, who is Spirit.
We are not to make graven images of our God, for every established idea will sometime have to give way in order that we may receive the Holy (whole) Spirit of God. The whole is greater than any formed part thereof.
