Metaphysical meaning of Shamgar (mbd)
Shamgar, sham'-gär (Heb.)--cup-bearer; most careful keeping; fleer; sword.
A deliverer of Israel. He smote six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad, and "saved Israel" (Judg. 3:31).
Meta. Anath, father of Shamgar, and meaning answering, signifies the Spirit's response to the cry of the soul for deliverance from opposing error thoughts. Shamgar represents the affirmations or words of Truth (sword) by whose power the opposing thoughts (Philistines) are overcome. The oxgoad signifies the strength and force of the thought back of one's true words. Cupbearer and most careful keeping bespeak the watchful attention and service that the individual gives to Truth when he desires with all his heart to become established in it.
