Silvanus, sil-va'-nus (Gk. fr. Lat.)--wood dwelling; living in woods; genius of the trees; wood nymph; rural deity of fields and flocks; abundant growth; abounding in trees; wooded; woody.
Thought to be the same person as Silas (II Cor. 1:19).
Meta. A rugged state of mind (wood dwelling, woody); also perception, understanding, working in conjunction with the will or the word of Truth (Paul), and zeal or the inspired reason united with faith (Timothy). (See SILAS, a form of this name.)
