Metaphysical meaning of Magor-missabib (mbd)
Magor-missabib, ma'-gôr-miss-sa-bib (Heb.)--fear all round; fear everywhere; terror is about; terror on every side.
A name that Jeremiah gave to Pashhur, who had smitten him and put him in the stocks (see Jer. 20:1-4).
Meta. "For thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will make thee a terror to thyself, and to all thy friends; and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and thine eyes shall behold it" (Jer. 20:4).
Pashhur, whom Jeremiah renamed Magor-missabib, signifies that in man which perceives the goodness of God, and expects all good without conforming to the divine law. Pashhur means liberation, freedom, prosperity round about. When a man perceives the good and builds up his faith in receiving good, yet does not conform to the divine law of good in love, mercy, right living, obedience to Truth, the time comes when his faith will no longer work for him; the fruition of his error sowing overtakes him. Then great fear assails him, for, turn whichever way he may, he can see no way out of the seeming evil--this is Magor-missabib.
