Peor, pe'-ôr (Heb.)--hiatus; yawning chasm; cleft; opening wide; gaping; ravenous beasts; insatiable longings; an idol of prostitution.
a A mountain in Moab. Balak, king of Moab, took Balaam to the top of this mountain in an effort to induce him to curse Israel, but Balaam was forced to bless Israel instead (Num. 23:28--24:9). b A Moabitish idol (Num. 25:18; Josh. 22:17).
