Mabel Butts

Rev. Mabel Butts, first African American ordained in Unity

Mabel Butts was ordained a Unity minister in 1952. She and one of the first two African Americans ordained in Unity.

The 1956 Unity Ministers Association Yearbook lists her serving at the Unity Center of Christianity, 382 Ashby St. NW., Atlanta Georgia.

The 1940 United States Federal Census lists her as 52 years old with the maiden name of Mabel Pope, living at the same address, married to Joseph Butts, aged 55, living with Mintie Pope, aged 75, presumably her mother, and Annie Mae Butts, aged 27, presumably her daughter. The census says that she completed her fist year of high school. According to the federal census, she was born circa 1888. Unity ordination records say that Mabel transitioned on 6/29/1982.
