Elkanah, el'-ka-nah (Heb.)--whom God has founded; God has created; possessed of God; ransomed by God.

a A Levite, of the hill country of Ephraim, husband of Hannah and father of Samuel the prophet (I Sam. 1: 1). b A son of Korah of the Levites (Exod. 6:24). c Three other Levites by this name are mentioned in I Chronicles 9:16; 12:6, 15:23. d Second to King Ahaz of Judah, and slain by Zichri a mighty man of Ephraim (II Chron. 28:7).

Meta. The understanding by man that he is from God, that his inheritance is from God, that he does not selfishly own anything, but that God possesses all and all that the Father has is man's.
