Unity Metaphysics 2 (Blue Book)
Lesson 01: Jesus Christ.
To fully comprehend what Jesus Christ means to the Unity movement, we must interpret His identity metaphysically. If Jesus Christ is truly to function as our Way-Shower and supreme model for living the enlightened life, we must be able to discern the elements of His nature which we share in common. The reality of the historical/physical person must be distinguished from the reality of His universal/spiritual essence. The purpose of this chapter is to provide insights into the basic components which comprise the nature of this illumined individual.

1A JESUS:
“Jesus - the Man of Nazareth . . . Jesus was keenly conscious of the character of God and his own relationship to Him. He knew God as unlimited love and as ever-present, abundant life; He knew Him as wisdom and supply. He knew God as Father, who is ever ready and willing to supply every need of the human heart” (RW/Jesus).
“He (Jesus) was man on the quest, man making the great discovery of His divinity, man breaking through the psychological barrier between man and God, man proving the Christ in man and his inherent potential for overcoming, for eternal life” (Discover the Power Within You 20).
Jesus is the name of the historical personal identity of the Man from Nazareth who became our Way-Shower.
1B CHRIST:
“Christ abides in each person as his potential perfection . . . Each man has within himself the Christ idea, just as Jesus had. Man must look to the indwelling Christ in order to recognize his sonship, his divine origin and birth” (RW/Christ)
“Christ is not a person. It is not Jesus. Christ is a degree of stature that Jesus attained, but a degree of potential stature that dwells in every man” (Discover the Power Within You 12).
“Christ in you is your hope of glory, for it is that of you that is. of God and is God being projected into visibility as you. Christ in you is your spiritual unity with the Infinite, key to your health and success” (Discover the Power Within You 45).
Christ is a divine idea. It is the name of the perfect pattern of wholeness which is present in all of God's offspring. The Christ within is our true essence and our divine nature. It is the presence of God within us.
1C JESUS CHRIST:

“Jesus Christ is a union of the two, the idea and the expression, or in other words, He is the perfect man demonstrated” (RW/Jesus Christ).
“The way would be more difficult for us without the way-shower, for in Him we find the embodiment of what all men truly are and are to be” (The Emerging Self 56).
“To say that we are men as Jesus Christ was a man is not exactly true, because He had dropped that personal consciousness by which we separate ourselves from our true God self . . . He proved in His resurrection and ascension that He had no consciousness separate from that of Being, therefore He really was this Being to all intents and purposes” (Atom-Smashing Power of Mind 40).
Jesus Christ is the name which identifies the individual who perfectly understood His divine nature, who fully demonstrated His divine potential, and who completely fulfilled His divine purpose on this earth. The spirit of God within Him was expressed in its fullness. We, in Unity, refer to Jesus Christ as our Elder Brother, Teacher, and Way-Shower who, by His works and words, teaches us that we, too, have the ability to manifest our own Christ potential. When Unity students refer to Jesus the Christ,they are intentionally acknowledging that Christ is the name of Jesus’ spiritual identity not His earthly last name.
1D ATONEMENT:
“The mind of each individual may be consciously unified with Divine Mind through the indwelling Christ. By affirming at-one-ment with God-Mind, we eventually realize the perfect mind which was in Christ Jesus” (Keep a True Lent 178).
Atonement is the spiritual experience in which we as individuals participate in conscious oneness with God. Though Jesus Christ did not accomplish this for us, by His life and teachings He showed us exactly the steps we must take to enter into this state of consciousness as He did.
1E FIRST AND SECOND COMING:
“This is the first and the second coming of Christ, spoken of in the Scriptures. The first coming is the receiving of Truth into the conscious mind, and the Second Coming is the awakening and regeneration of the subconscious mind through the superconscious of. the Christ mind” (The Twelve Powers of Man 15).
In Unity, we interpret the concept “the first and second coming” metaphys-,, ically. We do not (expect the physical re-entry of Jesus into the earth plane. Rather we interpret the scripture to mean that our spiritual transformation, our coming to terms with our divine nature, must come from the full realization in consciousness of the Christ mind within us.
1F SALVATION:
“Our salvation is in our living by the Christ pattern -- not only by the teachings of the man Jesus Christ but by the Christ Mind within us” (How To Let God Help You 56).
“Man’s salvation from sin, sickness, pain, and death comes by his understanding and conforming to the orderly Mind back of all existence” (Christian Healing 42).
“God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son. That whosoever believeth in should not perish but have eternal life.’ This does not mean that a personal man, named Jesus of Nazareth, was sent forth as a special propitiation for the sins of the world, or that the only available route into the Father’s presence lies through such a person. It simply means that God has provided a way by which all men may come consciously into His presence in their own souls. That way is through the only begotten Son of God, the Christ consciousness, which Jesus demonstrated” (The Twelve Powers of Man 118).
Salvation is a process that takes place within our own consciousness, not through the person named Jesus. We as individuals must cooperate with God in our own spiritual transformation just as Jesus did. Salvation results in our being made free from ignorance, lack and limitation, and in being made free for wholeness, abundance, peace, and fulfillment.
1G FOLLOWING JESUS:
“It is no idle experiment, this keeping in mind the words of Jesus. It is a very momentous undertaking, and may mark the most important period in the life of an individual. There may be sincerity and earnestness and right motive, and with all a determination to understand the spiritual import. This requires attention, time, and patience in the application of the mind to solving the deeper meanings of the sayings that we are urged to keep” (Talks On Truth 174).
In order to truly “follow” Jesus, we are to proceed on the path of spiritual enlightenment in the ways that He taught us. It is not worshiping the man, but walking the way of mastery as He did that fulfills our responsibility to “follow” Him.
1H CHRIST MIND/CHRIST CONSCIOUSNESS:
One of the laws of mind is that man becomes that with which he identifies himself. Christ is the one perfect pattern . . . Each should, therefore, be wise and identify himself with the Christ” (Keep a True Lent 180).
“Christ consciousness . . . consciousness built in accordance with the Christ ideal, or in absolute relationship to the Father. The perfect mind that was in Christ Jesus” (RW/Consciousness).
“This merging of God and man does not mean the total obliteration of man’s consciousness but its glorification or expansion into that of the divine” (Mysteries of John 151).
The Christ mind is a real, innate possession of every child of God. The Christ consciousness is that level of enlightenment we achieve through the process of self-mastery and spiritual unfoldment which is guided by the Christ mind. The attainment of Christ consciousness is the result of this process; it is not an instant achievement.
SUMMARY STATEMENTS
IN THE UNITY TEACHINGS WE SPEAK OF JESUS CHRIST BOTH HISTORICALLY AND METAPHYSICALLY.
JESUS IS THE NAME OF THE MAN FROM NAZARETH, THE HUMAN INDIVIDUAL.
CHRIST IS THE UNIVERSAL DIVINE IDEA WHICH IS THE SPIRITUAL PERFECTION INHERENT IN ALL OF GOD’S OFFSPRING.
JESUS CHRIST IS THE INDIVIDUAL WHO MOST FULLY EXPRESSED HIS CHRIST POTENTIAL.HE IS “THE PERFECT MAN DEMONSTRATED.” IN UNITY, WE OFTEN REFER TO JESUS CHRIST AS OUR BROTHER, TEACHER AND WAY-SHOWER.
ATONEMENT IS CONSCIOUS ONENESS WITH GOD. (AT-ONE-MENT)
THE SECOND COMING IS THE FULL AWARENESS AND ACCEPTANCE OF OUR DIVINE NATURE ON EVERY LEVEL OF OUR BEING.
SALVATION IN UNITY IS NOT ACCOMPLISHED FOR US BY THE MAN JESUS, BUT BY OUR ONGOING IDENTIFICATION OF THE CHRIST PRESENCE WITHIN US.
FOLLOWING JESUS MEANS TO FOLLOW HIS TEACHINGS AND HIS EXAMPLE,
THE CHRIST MIND IS THE ABSOLUTE REALITY OF OUR BEING. THE CHRIST CONSCIOUSNESS IS THE RESULT OF A PROCESS OF SELF-MASTERY AND SPIRITUAL UNFOLDMENT.
